Midgets 2018

The Midget division is designed for players age 5-6 which focuses on the fundamentals of throwing, fielding, and hitting while learning a team concept. Adults pitch to the players. During the game, coaches are permitted on the field to pitch to their own players and to reinforce defensive positions in the field. Games are typically played once per week with an additional practice. In this division players will bat through the lineup each inning. Games are typically 3 to 4 innings long.

Important Information

LAA Midgets Division Rules
• A regulation game is 3-4 innings and is recommended not to exceed 1 hour and 45 minutes in length.
• The entire roster will bat each inning. Outs will be called but will not end an inning.
• The first two weeks of game season there is 1 game and 1 practice per week. (This is a suggestion to be agreed upon by the coaches)
• At this level there is no need to keep score.

OFFENSE: BATTING/BASERUNNING
• All rostered players present for the game shall bat in the batting order. Please use the same order per inning. Vary the order from game to game to give each player a chance to bat in the top of the lineup.
• Batting helmets must be used at bat and as base runners.
• All hitters shall have 8 attempts to hit the ball being thrown by the pitching coach. If the batter is unsuccessful after 8 pitches, the batter shall hit the ball from a batting tee or if both coaches are in agreement before the game you can use an assistant coach to help the player swing and connect with the ball instead of using the batting tee.
• Each coach will pitch to their own team.
• No stealing or leading off is permitted and players DO NOT advance on over throws.

DEFENSE: FIELDING
• All players are to take the field. Please position the infield with a third baseman, second baseman, shortstop, pitcher and first baseman. All extra players in the outfield spread out. Allow all players to get at least 1-2 innings in the infield.
• A coach may be stationed beyond infielders in order to provide instruction to all defensive players.
• The pitching coach shall not pitch the ball until the pitcher and defensive players are in the ready position and prepared to field the ball.
• If a batted or thrown ball hits the pitching coach, the ball is in play.
• If a player is called out he has to walk off the base and go back to the bench. (It is very important to review this in practice so kids start to understand what it means to be out or safe.)
• Bases are cleared after 3 outs made, continue to bat through the lineup.
• If a batter hits the ball into the OF gaps, runners may take an extra base. The coaches at first/3rd should instruct the player to stay or run. Only one extra base is permitted.
• A runner will not be allowed to advance because of an overthrown ball. As you know a lot of the balls are overthrown.
• Instruct the kids that they can only advance a base if the batted ball hits the ground. If a fly catch is made, the runner has to go back to the base he/she started from.

FIELD MAINTENANCE:
• The home team (sits on first base side) is responsible for setting up the bases and lining the playing field.
• The away team (sits on 3rd base side) is responsible for putting away the bases in the storage box unless there is a game after your game.
SAFETY:
• All teams should have received first aid kits and ice packs.
• Players not batting must remain seated on their team bench at all times to prevent possible injury. Please have a bench coach at all times. The on deck batter may warm up in a designated on deck area.
