2003 Highlights

2003 12 YEAR OLD LAA SUBURBAN LEAGUE TRAVEL TEAM RECAP

The 2003 season started on April 4th against its cross-township rival Middletown Athletic Association (MAA). With game time temperatures in the 30's, the Lions jumped out to an early 2 run lead. As the temperature continued to drop, MAA got hotter and went on to win the game 6-4. The boys are now ready to "roll" and waiting for some warmer weather.

After an almost 3 week lay off because of the early Spring rains and with three key players on the disabled list , the Lions traveled to Pennsbury for its second game. After being down 4-0 after the first inning The Lions came back to take the lead in the 4th inning, 5-4. Pennsbury then took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Facing darkness and possible suspension of the game, The Lions got a key two out, two strike single by Phil Hetzel. Phil then stole second and scored on an error by the centerfielder to tie the game. David Papasidero then pitched a scoreless 6th inning to end the game in a 6-6 tie. Good performances were put in by Matt Frakes, 3 scorless innings, Kyle Naylor, key defensive plays and Tyler Orr and Andrew Strenge for key hits.

On a beautiful spring afternoon the Lions faced Upper Southampton in Game 3. The Lions took an early lead in the first inning with a two run RBI double from Kyle Dufresne and never looked back. Kyle also added a triple in the Lions 4-1 victory against Upper Southampton. Winning pitcher, David Papasidero, gave up one run in his three innings. Kyle Naylor pitched three scoreless innings.

The Lions won Game 4 against arch rival CR-Holland 4-0 on May 2nd. Matt Frakes and David Papasidero combined to pitch a 4-0 shutout against the defending Suburban champs, Holland. Andrew Strenge had two doubles and Kyle Dufresne added a triple for the Lions. There were many outstanding defensive plays throughout the contest from both teams.

Game 5 on May 11th was another exciting win for the kids from LAA. David Papasidero pitched a complete game in the Lion's victory over Levittown Continental by a score of 8-3. Kyle Naylor, Zach Turchi and TJ Judge contributed with key hits during the victory. The injury plague game also featured many defensive plays.

The sun shined on the the Lions in Game 6 as they improved their record to 4-1-1.The Lions, with good pitching from Mike Pereria, Kyle Naylor and Andrew Strenge, beat Lower Southampton 16-3. Andrew Strenge had 4 strikeouts in facing 6 batters. Tyler Orr and T.J. Judge had two hits each for the Lions. Next up for the Lions is Levittown American (1960 LL World Series Champs).

In Game 7, Matt Frakes pitched a one hitter as the Lions trounced Levittown American 10-0. David Papasidero lead the offense with two hits and 4 RBI's. Kyle Dufresne, Kyle Naylor, Matt Frakes and Tyler Orr also contributed to the victory. Next up for the Lions is Warrington on Friday, May 23 and then they will travel to Reading for a Memorial Day Weekend Tournament.

After a two week layoff because of more rain, the Lions finally played some baseball against Valley in Game 8 on May 30th. Valley jumped out to a quick 4 run lead after a half inning but the Lions roared back to win their 6th consecutive game by a score of 7-6.

After many attempts to get games in due to bad weather, the Lions played 4 games in 4 days. In the first game Warrington took advantage of walks and errors to beat the Lions 10-0. The Lions outhit the Warrington team 5 hits to 4 but it wasn't enough to beat the fellow District 30 foe.

The next game saw the Lions defeating Morrisville 3-0. Matt Frakes threw a 1 hitter and Kyle Dufresne and Tyler Orr led the offensive attack.

The next game was Newtown. Despite throwing 6 inning no hit ball, the Lions lost to Newtown 2-1 in 7 innings. Kyle Naylor threw 6 innings giving up no hits and Hunter Selman came into the 7th inning and also pitched a no hit inning. A couple walks and an error was the deciding factor in this contest.

The last game of the weekend had Hopewell Valley from New Jersey visiting Langhorne. The Lions won 8-0. Matt Frakes threw the shut out and Kyle Dufresne hept his hot bat and led the offensive attack. David Papasidero also had key hits during the contest. The Lions regular season ended after this contest and ended up with an 8-3-1 record and is now the third seed of the playoffs. The Lions will host Levittown American in the first round.

Surburban Playoffs

On a nice Father's Day Sunday, the Lions nipped the visiting Levittown American team 2-1. The Lions scored 2 runs in the first inning and then proceeded to hold on to the lead for the victory. Again, Matt Frakes had a great appearance and held the team from Levittown to 3 hits. Kyle Dufresne had two doubles and a single to again lead the offensive attack. Phil Hetzel, TJ Judge and David Papasidero added to the attack. Next up for the Lions will be Morrisville in the Semi-Final Game.

The Semi-Final game was a pitchers duel between LAA and Morrisville. At the end of 6 innings with the score tied at 2-2, Morrisville conceded the game. The Morrisville team was conserving "pitchers" for the up-coming District Little Little Tournament.

The Championship Game of the Suburban League featured two powerful teams in LAA and Warrington. LAA came out flat and ended flat as Warrington won 8-4. Good Luck to both teams in the District 30 Tournament.

2002 Highlights as 11's

11 YEAR OLD LAA/SUBURBAN LEAGUE TRAVEL TEAM RECAP-2002 SEASON

After a dismal start to the season, 2-4 record, the 11 year old travel team turned it up a notch and ran off 8 straight victories to finish the season at 10-4 to finish second in the very tough Suburban Travel League. During the first 6 games we lost to Tri-Township and Middletown in extra innings and lost to Southampton 2-0 in the season opener and were upset by a very tough team from Valley. At this point we were looking for answers for the losing and who would have thought that we would win out for the rest of the season (the coaches did). During the streak the boys beat a number of very good teams along the way. They would defeat Levittown in a close game, Pennsbury, Doylestown, Lenape Valley, Newtown, Northampton and our close rival, Holland, who would eventually be the champions of the 11-year-old age group. We had a forfeit with Upper Makefield to finish the regular season. They also defeated Warrington twice during the season. Langhorne was the second seed in the playoffs and unfortunately we went in a batting slump and lost to Doylestown 4-2. The coaches and parents were very proud of the way the boys bounced back from the dismal start to end the regular season at a 10-4 record! Now, on to the 12 year old age group for the 2003 season!!!

11-YEAR-OLD AABC STATE TOURNAMENT (Held in Philadelphia)

The season was over for the Suburban League and while finishing in second place during the year the team qualified to play in the very tough AABC State Tournament that was held in Philadelphia and hosted by Crispin. Crispin was the champion of the Philadelphia Rec League. Also participating in the tournament was the champs from the Devlin League, Calvary, the runner-ups from The Philadelphia Rec League, Fox Rock, and the champions and runner-ups from the Montco Travel League, Horsham and Upper Dublin. The competition was fierce and the results were favorable. In the first game, Langhorne defeated the host team Crispin 3-2 in a nail biting finish on Friday evening. We then played on Saturday morning in the extreme heat and beat our opponent by the ten run rule. The next game was against a very tough Calvary team and the heat index got to the kids and we had to forfeit after the 5th inning because we only had ten kids and our catcher became ill due to the heat. At the time we were losing 4-2 and we seemed to have the momentum going into the sixth inning. On Sunday morning we advanced to the semis and ten runned another opponent. Langhorne played Calvary in the finals on Sunday afternoon and after a seesaw battle throughout, Calvary ended up defeating Langhorne for the State title and advancing to the next round that was held in Brooklyn. Langhorne, being the runner-ups, were also invited to go and compete in Brooklyn but declined due to the lack of players. Most of the players with their families were going on well-deserved vacations.

12-YEAR-OLD Little League Tournament

The 12-year-old Little League tournament is the tournament that all Little Leaguers strive for. Since their days in T-Ball, most kids dream about playing in Williamsport, on TV and representing their country. They play numerous amounts of games and spend many many hours on the baseball diamond preparing and hoping that they make their Little League All Star team to represent their league. There are thousands of kids that play Little League Baseball throughout the country but there are only a small percentage of kids that are picked to represent their leagues to compete against other Little League organizations.

The 2002 LAA Tournament Team was comprised of 3 twelve-year-old players and 9 eleven year olds. From the start of the tournament LAA was already considered an underdog and teams were eager to play us with anticipation of an easy win. But that didn’t happen. In the bracket part of the tournament LAA was 1-2. In these three games LAA lost to a very good and experienced Newtown team and lost to them by a score of 8-5. Newtown was the runner-ups in the Suburban Travel League.  Next was Holland, the champions of the very tough Suburban Travel League.  With great pitching from both teams Holland ending up beating LAA 5-0. The score was 1-0 going into the top of the fifth inning and LAA had a couple runners on when the Holland team made a pitching change by putting their ace in to shut down the rally. Holland scored 4 runs in the bottom part of the inning to close the game out. Next was Warrington, and this game ended up to be an offensive battle with LAA winning by the score of 16-14.

On to the double elimination part of the tournament and LAA opened up playing an underestimated Deep Run team and lost to them by a close score. With their backs to the wall and facing elimination LAA was now facing a team from Upper Makefield. With Upper Makefield winning throughout the contest through the first four innings and winning by a 3-1 margin, LAA got a key timely three run homer and end up winning the game by a 6-4 score. It was exciting for the boys since no LAA team has ever won more than 1 game in 12-year-old tournament play. Next up was Lenape Valley and facing a very fast and control pitcher LAA’s dream season was over.

This team consisted of very talented and committed boys who love the game of baseball and the coaches and parents are very proud of them. They never gave up and held their heads high when the tournament was completed. They represented LAA quite well and the league was proud of their efforts.
