The 2003 season started on April 4th against
its cross-township rival Middletown Athletic Association (MAA). With game time temperatures in the
30's, the Lions jumped out to an early
2 run lead. As the temperature continued to drop, MAA got hotter and went
on to win the game 6-4. The boys are now ready to "roll" and waiting for
some warmer weather.
After a dismal start to the
season, 2-4 record, the 11 year old travel team turned it up a notch and ran
off 8 straight victories to finish the season at 10-4 to finish second in the
very tough Suburban Travel League. During the first 6 games we lost to
Tri-Township and Middletown in extra innings and lost to Southampton 2-0 in the
season opener and were upset by a very tough team from Valley. At this point we
were looking for answers for the losing and who would have thought that we
would win out for the rest of the season (the coaches did). During the streak
the boys beat a number of very good teams along the way. They would defeat
Levittown in a close game, Pennsbury, Doylestown, Lenape Valley, Newtown,
Northampton and our close rival, Holland, who would eventually be the champions
of the 11-year-old age group. We had a forfeit with Upper Makefield to finish
the regular season. They also defeated Warrington twice during the season.
Langhorne was the second seed in the playoffs and unfortunately we went in a
batting slump and lost to Doylestown 4-2. The coaches and parents were very
proud of the way the boys bounced back from the dismal start to end the regular
season at a 10-4 record! Now, on to the 12 year old age group for the 2003
season!!!
11-YEAR-OLD AABC STATE TOURNAMENT (Held in
Philadelphia)
The season was over for the
Suburban League and while finishing in second place during the year the team
qualified to play in the very tough AABC State Tournament that was held in
Philadelphia and hosted by Crispin. Crispin was the champion of the
Philadelphia Rec League. Also participating in the tournament was the champs
from the Devlin League, Calvary, the runner-ups from The Philadelphia Rec League,
Fox Rock, and the champions and runner-ups from the Montco Travel League,
Horsham and Upper Dublin. The competition was fierce and the results were
favorable. In the first game, Langhorne defeated the host team Crispin 3-2 in a
nail biting finish on Friday evening. We then played on Saturday morning in the
extreme heat and beat our opponent by the ten run rule. The next game was
against a very tough Calvary team and the heat index got to the kids and we had
to forfeit after the 5th inning because we only had ten kids and our
catcher became ill due to the heat. At the time we were losing 4-2 and we
seemed to have the momentum going into the sixth inning. On Sunday morning we
advanced to the semis and ten runned another opponent. Langhorne played Calvary
in the finals on Sunday afternoon and after a seesaw battle throughout, Calvary
ended up defeating Langhorne for the State title and advancing to the next
round that was held in Brooklyn. Langhorne, being the runner-ups, were also
invited to go and compete in Brooklyn but declined due to the lack of players.
Most of the players with their families were going on well-deserved vacations.
12-YEAR-OLD Little League Tournament
The 12-year-old Little League tournament is the tournament that all Little Leaguers strive for. Since their days in T-Ball, most kids dream about playing in Williamsport, on TV and representing their country. They play numerous amounts of games and spend many many hours on the baseball diamond preparing and hoping that they make their Little League All Star team to represent their league. There are thousands of kids that play Little League Baseball throughout the country but there are only a small percentage of kids that are picked to represent their leagues to compete against other Little League organizations.
The 2002 LAA Tournament Team was comprised of 3 twelve-year-old players and 9 eleven year olds. From the start of the tournament LAA was already considered an underdog and teams were eager to play us with anticipation of an easy win. But that didn’t happen. In the bracket part of the tournament LAA was 1-2. In these three games LAA lost to a very good and experienced Newtown team and lost to them by a score of 8-5. Newtown was the runner-ups in the Suburban Travel League. Next was Holland, the champions of the very tough Suburban Travel League. With great pitching from both teams Holland ending up beating LAA 5-0. The score was 1-0 going into the top of the fifth inning and LAA had a couple runners on when the Holland team made a pitching change by putting their ace in to shut down the rally. Holland scored 4 runs in the bottom part of the inning to close the game out. Next was Warrington, and this game ended up to be an offensive battle with LAA winning by the score of 16-14."The way a team plays as a whole determines it's success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don't play together the club won't be worth a dime." - Babe Ruth.
